When you think about horror films, it’s certain that many will spring to mind – because the fact is that there are a lot for you to choose from. Hollywood has been making this type of film for years, and it seems that the audience just can’t get enough of them. Whether we enjoy them, or cower at the thought of them, it’s very difficult to get through life without becoming familiar with at least one or two of them, because there are new movies being released all the time thanks to the high demand that consumers are placing on the industry.

Since horror movies were first released, there has been a lot of imagination put into the main characters, to try and make them as scary as possible to the audience who are watching the movies. In order to find who is the best villain of all, Best Offers Bingo has conducted a survey of 1800 people asking who the best horror villain of all time is. Below are the top 6 results!


6. Jaws

If you don’t know the film, you will certainly know the theme music, because the two-note motif has been used in spoofs and cartoons ever since it was first released. This is an interesting result, because in the film, it is more the unease and unknown that is the open water that is the villain rather than the shark itself – yet Jaws still gained 113 votes in the survey, showing that it was a popular villain indeed.


5. Terminator

With 132 votes it’s clear to see that the “Terminator” franchise is still going strong, following the story of a villain sent back in time to kill a girl. This is one of those films that most people will either have seen or heard about, meaning that it’s no surprise that the villain of the piece has made the top 5 in the survey.


4. Norman Bates

A classic horror movie, nothing in technical comparison to the movies released today, “Psycho” still holds a firm place in the hearts of movie enthusiasts everywhere. The film tells the story of a serial killer who suffers with mental illness after the death of his mother, and follows him as he stalks his victims who are staying in his hotel, before killing them whilst being dressed in his dead mother’s clothes. A chilling and haunting moment is felt just before each murder, and even though nothing at all is seen that is graphic, the intent is still clearly felt, and it resonates with the audience – earning 150 votes in the survey.


3. Alien

Alien is a science-fiction type of horror film that is based on an extra-terrestrial life form Alien, The series of films are centred on a story that depicts, Warrant Officer, Ellen Ripley, and her battles life-form, commonly referred to as “the Alien”. Alien has developed over the years into a series of films with famously grotesque scenes of Alien ruthlessly killing. One of the most stand-out pinnacles of the character was in film Predator Vs. Alien, where alien showed just how mindlessly violent the character could be. Predator also came off as a good guy in comparison!


2. Freddy Krueger

Fred “Freddy” Krueger got 340 votes is the main antagonist of the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” film series. He first appeared as a burnt serial killer who uses a glove armed with razors to kill his victims in their dreams. This causes their deaths in the real world as well. In the dream world, he is a powerful force and almost completely invulnerable to damage. However, whenever Freddy is pulled into the real world, he has normal human vulnerabilities. His iconic razor fingers are what makes him so famous in the horror world.


1. Hannibal Lecter

In first place is the infamous Hannibal Lecter. This clever and psychologically brilliant villain has stolen audiences hearts by being equal parts of evil and fascinating. Hannibal is an intelligent man who just so happens to have a thirst for human blood. He helps FBI agent, Clarice, to track down an even more sinister killer by getting inside the head of a criminal.
