Smashed Short Film Review

Smashed film

Already winning multiple awards and being selected for the Oscar qualifying Palm Springs Shortfest I had to give Smashed a watch to see what all the fuss was about.

Starring Harrison Gilbertson (Need for Speed) Toby Wallace (INXS: Never Tear Us Apart) and rising star Sarah Jeavons, Smashed is a nervy thriller that portrays equal parts Horror with an eye opening message.

The story revolves around Dean, Roy and Paul who fueled by jealousy kidnap popular kid Christian so that Dean can gain the affection of Christian’s girlfriend at a local party. What starts off as a prank swerves so far beyond their control that none of them ever see it coming.

Smashed really hits home on a few major talking points here which is surprising for a film of such short length clocking in at around a 15 minute run time. Taking matters into your own hands doesn’t always pay off and doing stupid things usually go without consequence in many films we see on a day to day basis. Smashed takes those pranks of youth and adds a more realistic and horrific twist to proceedings and at the same time allows all of those involved to witness and face up to the consequences of their actions.

A brilliant short film that deserves every award thrown at it. Best of luck to them!
