So I’m a little late with this review but I promise you it’s for a good reason. When I attended MCM London Comic Con this year I made it my sole mission to get as many subscription boxes as humanly possible. This later turned into an instant regret as I didn’t factor in the editing, reviewing, unboxing and pictures needed to make the videos possible. Suddenly I was faced with a mountain to climb, with no equipment or preparation. Thankfully, one of the boxes came with some Darth Vader socks so I ascended the mountain one cold frosty step at a time with the aid of the dark side and that brings me to today, review day!

Sean Evans Back to the Movies

The first London show of 2018 and my what a show it was. Some of the guests were out of this world and instantly the thoughts of long queues and awful organization went racing through my head as it does everytime big guests are announced (thanks Showmasters). Thankfully these worries were quickly put at ease as I never had to queue for more than 10 minutes for anything all day! Naturally, I avoided the Funko exclusive booth as the queues for that were borderline ridiculous and the variants weren’t all that great this year in my opinion bar the Rick and Morty Alien Rick MCM edition. That was pretty sweet.

Lucifer’s Tom Ellis drew in the crowds as he took to the stage with a guitar and tales of the strength of the recent #SaveLucifer response. Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, The Defenders’ Rosario Dawson, Khary Payton and Cooper Andrews from The Walking Dead, and ‘Queen of Geek’ Felicia Day also headlined the pop culture weekend, with standing-room-only theatre appearances.

Orange is the New Black stars Taryn Manning and Jackie Cruz, Deadpool 2 stars Brianna Hildebrand and Stefan Kapičić, Grand Theft Auto V’s Ned Luke, Shawn Fonteno and Steven Ogg, Overwatch heroes Lucie Pohl and Gaku, Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator), Kevin Conroy (famous for portraying Batman in the classic ‘90s cartoons) also met adorning fans throughout the weekend.

As a huge Deadpool fan, I went down the poster in hand determined to meet both Stefan and Brianna from the movie. Their lines were relatively short when I got there and within 20 minutes I had met them both and oh, how lovely they were! Stefan who plays the role of Colossus in Deadpool and Deadpool 2 was an all-out rockstar. Man hugs and manly handshakes as we had a quick conversation about a particular scene in the movie (don’t worry I won’t spoil it). Then I met Brianna who was so sweet and almost shy but the second she saw the poster I was having signed she lit up like a Christmas tree.

There were so many guests at this convention that I had to narrow down who I wanted to meet for obvious reasons but most of the day’s events panned out without me needing to queue up. The stalls were a relatively crowd-free area depending on which particular stall you were at, the Universal stall was rammed all day with their Jurassic World photo-op queue being full at all times.

The cosplay on display was incredible. I always admire the work, effort, and care that goes into each and every costume and some of the outfits on display were just immaculate. MCM always provide a vibrant cosplay scene, easily the best show to attend if you’re a fan of cosplay as the arena was filled with colorful costumes and all things nerdy.

Unlike most press, I go into MCM from a fan perspective. I shun the press benefits such as the junket interviews as it all feels rather forced and unnatural. I want the celebrities in their natural environment with real interaction not pre-thought out answers and cagey press encounters. I soaked up all the atmosphere and was having a good laugh with Red Dwarf’s Danny John Jules. He was wearing a Chelsea FC cap and a few days prior Chelsea had just beaten my team Manchester United in the FA Cup. Safe to say we had some good banter and it’s moments like those that mean more to me than any press room or junket.

Whilst on my subscription box mission I still ended up purchasing a few items that weren’t box or subscription related. Within 30 seconds of being inside the venue the first purchase was made. I bought some beautiful Pokemon art from Patrick’s Art Room. Patrick was there on hand to sign my 8×10 print and a friend of mine went and purchased a giant Pokemon canvas for his son. The artwork was so vibrant and beautiful that it was hard to turn down. I’m not a big Pokemon fan by any means so the fact that I bought this shows you the caliber and quality of the images that were on display.

Next up I headed over to a stall called Mister Mistry. This stall was an artist selling custom prints, murals, street art designs and more. I spoke to these guys for quite some time and unlike most comic con fans in attendance, I was far more interested in the custom Tupac artwork that they had on a printed T-Shirt. I’m a huge fan of Tupac and the intricate poetry that the man wrote and the design was a mix of comic-con innocence and vibrant color. I had to get it. Huge thanks to Mister Mistry for hooking me up!

Last but certainly not least was the customary autograph pick-up. I visited a stand called Signing Dreams who are a UACC and AFTAL registered dealership. These guys travel the globe to obtain autographs in person and sell them at ridiculously reasonable prices. The pricing was that good that I got home, hopped onto their eBay Store and purchased a few more for myself. Take a look at my purchases below and a huge shout-out to Signing Dreams. One of the most reasonably priced autograph dealers I’ve encountered.

After a day that absolutely flew by I ended the day by swooping on my subscription box stalls and managed to pick up the following boxes. Should you wish to see an unboxing of each box then just click the image of whichever box you’d like to see and you’ll be directed to the relevant unboxing review of that particular box:

Once again I had another great trip down to London for MCM Comic Con. The atmosphere is always wonderful, the signings and photo-shoots are done so effortlessly compared to other cons and the stalls were on another level this time around. Huge thanks to MCM for inviting me down and already I’m looking forward to Manchester Comic Con which is quickly approaching!
