The newest Marvel Studio recruits, the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, rocketed into UK cinemas this week collecting a studio estimate of £6.4 million in box office within its opening four days. The film has the honour of having one of the biggest ever original Marvel openings in the UK taking more in its first four days than the first instalments of Iron Man (£5.6m – 4 day opening), Thor (£5.46m – 6 day opening), Captain America (£3.3m – 3 day opening) and X-Men (£4.8m – 4 day opening).
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY is also set to become the #1 movie across the whole galaxy with an international opening of $160.4m. In the United States the film has already broken records to become the biggest ever August opening of all time taking $94m since its release on Friday.

Produced by Marvel (the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and Avengers Assemble), GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan (Lee Pace), a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), a gun-toting raccoon, Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista). But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.
