We often see amazingly strong and super human characters grace our cinema screens, doing unbelievable things and saving the world. Over the years we’ve seen more than our fair share of men and women taking on super villains and bad guys, but occasionally there will be those extraordinary characters that have other obstacles to overcome, such as disabilities.
Hollywood will occasionally release a movie focusing on disability, however more often than not, these are mental disabilities such as dementia in Still Alice or autism in Rain Man. Only a handful of times are physical disabilities addressed, but there have been a handful of truly amazing characters that don’t let disability get in their way.
Lieutenant Dan – Forrest Gump
Lieutenant Dan was the Yin to Forrest Gump’s Yang, the two were both comrades and friends and Lieutenant Dan quickly became one of film’s most loved characters. Throughout the film, we follow Dan on his journey to accept his disability after the war, eventually sharing the Bubba Gump Shrimp business and learning to accept his situation and move forward.
Charles Xavier – The X-Men Franchise
The leader of the X-Men is the one calling all of the shots Despite his disability, Charles Xavier goes on to run a school especially for those with the mutant gene. He becomes a father figure and mentor to hundreds of children and X-Men, not to mention he can pretty much control anyone with the power of his mind.
Daredevil – Daredevil
Despite the Ben Affleck lead movie not really packing the same punches as the comics, or the amazing Netflix series that was to follow, Daredevil is as action packed as they come. Blinded by toxic waste, Matt Murdoch takes to the street under the guise of Daredevil, using his superhuman senses to fight the criminals of Hell’s Kitchen.
Zatoichi – Zatoichi
Zatoichi is a character from the long running Japanese film and TV show of the same name. A bit like Daredevil, he uses his blademaster skills and heightened senses to fight. The character has featured in over 26 different movies from 1962 to 1989 and over the years, he’s seen his fair share of action.
Cherry Darling – Planet Terror
Cherry Darling is one of the main characters in Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez’s movie, Planet Terror. After getting her leg ripped off by ‘Sickos’ (Zombies), Cherry wakes up to find her leg has been replaced by a high powered machine gun. After being captured, she uses her leg to free herself, kill her captors and ultimately frees her fellow prisoners.
All of these characters have overcome their disabilities to do truly remarkable things and it’s safe to say, we are all more than ready to see more characters with disabilities prove that there is nothing you can’t do.
